We all know what it’s like to be in the presence of a great coach. At one time or another in our lives, we’ve come into contact with somebody who has inspired us in ways we thought were impossible. These people have a knack for finding out what makes us tick and how to harness that energy to make us better people.

But what if you don’t just want to listen to coaches? What if you want to become one yourself? Here we’re going to investigate how you can do just that. These are the habits that make coaches successful. (It’s not all about experience).

Habit 1: Successful Coaches Challenge Themselves Daily

Great coaches aren’t passive people. They’re active, and they’re always looking for new ways to help their clients. They understand that each individual they come into contact with is different. And so, as a result, they know that coaching isn’t something that can be learned from a book. It takes a lifetime to get really good at it.

Top coaches listen to each other to help themselves improve. In the past, they would have to get together at conferences. But today, the internet is a great resource. Sites like have information and training on what makes a great coach. It’s worth pointing out that different people have different philosophies on what makes a great coach. Understanding these theories is essential for coaches who are relatively new to the art.

Habit 2: Successful Coaches Are Curious

To coach somebody effectively, you have to truly understand who they are and what they want. Just applying a blanket approach to each client won’t work. People are too different. That’s why curiosity is a great habit for coaches. Curiosity gives you some important capacities that will supercharge your career. The first is being able to listen to views of people you don’t agree with and being open to new ideas. Your clients are motivated by their ideas, and so if they are wrong, you need to be able to find out about them and work with them. Showing them where their ideas are wrong, rather than opposing them, is an effective coaching technique. The other main benefit is that you get to find out more about your client’s real strengths and weaknesses. Often people will emphasize their strengths and hide their weaknesses. But these aspects of their personality need to be explored before coaching can proceed effectively.

It’s often been said that the best way to learn is to teach something yourself. This is what Michael Hebron, a golf coach from, believes. When he conducts a lesson, he always gets his students to tell him what he should be doing. This helps him understand his student’s prior knowledge, and he can then go forward from there.

Habit 4: Write Down Goals For Each Session

Students want to know what they are going to get out of each session. It’s a good idea, therefore, for coaches to write down goals and learning objectives, every time they meet. This helps to make sessions more focused and gives students key takeaways.
